I am sorry to say that I don't have any great "front porch" stories, but I do have the best "welcome home" story...
I met my fighter pilot husband, Rick, on St. Patrick's Day 2006 and as sappy as it sounds it was love at first sight. We spent every waking moment together until June 2, 2006 when he left for Tucson, Arizona. I was under contract with Peach State Summer Theatre and couldn't leave, however we talked constantly and my mom and dad "loved" the cell bills. My first trip out west, August of the same year, Rick proposed and with wedding plans to be made the cell phone bills doubled (at this point I was added to his plan).
While stationed in Arizona, we saw each other for holidays and a few weekends and were married exactly one year later: June 2, 2007. He was gone though by September, this time to Alabama until November, and then back to Arizona from January until March. Rick was home for the better part of the summer and then deployed for Afghanistan on September 3, 2008.
After the longest six months of my life, Rick returned to me about 15 pounds lighter and sleep deprived. During his first weeks home we worked around the house, bought a boat and visited family. I found the Peach and Love site and decided I really wanted the game, but we left for vacation on March 15th and it kinda took a back seat to my hubby.
We took my parent's camper to the Keys and spent the first two days out on the water fishing, by "we" I mean "he" because while he fished, I fried (and before you ask, yes I had on like spf 3000). On St. Patrick's Day I was too burned to go out so Rick and I stayed in. By 8:00 I was in my PJ's and with no television or amenities we played rummy.
I apologized because I felt horrible: he was just home from 6 months at war and 3 years to the day after we fell in love I was in too much pain to go out and we were playing cards.
Rick looked at me and said that he never thought a welcome home gift could be as perfect as playing cards in his pajamas with his wife.
He has never (and probably will never again) say something as poetic and perfect as that. It is a memory I will keep forever and while searching Facebook today, your card game made me relive the memory all over-thank you.
